Smoke Alarms Save Lives

If smoke alarms are installed properly and maintained, they can play a major role in saving lives during a fire. Once a fire starts, the smoke will move quickly. Working smoke alarms will give you a warning so that you can get outside fast. Once outside, your family should have a special meeting place. When you reach this designated area, DO NOT go back into the house for any reason. According to NFPA, an estimated 3 out of 5 house fire deaths occurred due to no working smoke alarms in the home. Did you also know that a closed door can slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire?

Smoke alarm tips:

·     Test your smoke alarm every month.

·     Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or have difficulty hearing.

·     Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, as well as outside of each area that someone sleeps in.

·     Each level of the house needs an alarm, including the basement.

·     Smoke alarms should be installed high on walls or ceilings.

·     Do not install smoke alarms in kitchen areas.

·     People who are hard of hearing or deaf can use special alarms. These alarms will have strobe lights and bed shakers.
