The Kuykendall family has been training border collies for decades, and that training has included instruction on everything from basic obedience to the highly specialized skill of herding away unwanted Canada geese for clients.
“We train our dogs for work because our business depends on it, but every dog needs a little training, even if he’s a household pet,” said Gwen Kuykendall, co-owner of Kuykendall Working Border Collies, Inc.
Basic training for a family dog is essential for several reasons.
“For one thing you want to be able to take your dog out of the house and have him interact with people and other dogs. You can’t do that without teaching him some basic do’s and don’ts,” said Gwen. “It’s also extremely important that your dog learn how to sit, stay and come, especially if you live near a busy street.”
In recognition of January as “National Train Your Dog Month”, the Kuykendall’s are stressing the importance of teaching your dog the basics.
Learning how to sit: “Once your dog is in a sitting position, say ‘Sit’, then reward him with a treat, and show him affection. Repeat this sequence a few times every day until your dog has mastered the command.”
Learning how to come: “Do this by using a leash and collar as a training device whenever your dog leaves the house to get into the family car, or go for a walk. Pull Use the check method and the leash gently toward you as you ‘Come’, and when he comes to you, reward him with affection and a treat. It’s best to practice this technique in a fenced yard or safe space.”
Above all, there are three things to remember when training your family pet.
“I call them the “3 R’s”: Repeating things helps your dog learn, Rewarding your dog for good behavior over and over again, and Reinforcing the lesson at regular intervals means your dog won’t forget what he’s learned,” said Gwen.
To augment your own informal training, it’s also a good idea to explore the possibility of enrolling your dog in a formal training class. Ask a friend or your vet to suggest a reputable class. For more information visit www.Kuykendall-BC.com
