Special Olympics of N.C. in Clay County concluded their fall sports season with competitions at the SONC Fall Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Lana Foster competed in individual skills, earning a 1st place Gold Medal in her division. Congratulations to her and Coach Misty Davenport.
The next day Bocce had their Doubles Team competition. Team Wonder Women-Anna Grace Parks and Marie Lance earned a 2nd place Silver Medal in their Division. Congratulations to these young women on their accomplishment. Team Dynamic Duo-Stevie Morris and Kurtis Green earned a 4th place ribbon. Congratulations on games well played with great sportsmanship.
Our Bocce team also has a new uprising Bocce athlete James Golden who did excellent with learning the ropes of fall games and showing his team his new bocce skills, earning a participation award. Congratulations to Coach Misty Davenport on all her hard work, expertise on all things Bocce and volunteering her time pouring into athletes in our community. Her dedication to health, fitness and bringing the sport of Bocce to SONC Clay County made the experiences and opportunities this past weekend possible.Thank you Penny DeZess, Hunter DeZess, Tia Strickland, Moss Memorial Library and Clay County Parks and Recreation Department for your help with Bocce courts and meeting facilities.
Clay County Special Olympics also had one other sport and athlete competing at the State Fall Tournament. John Riley competed in Golf Individual Skills Men’s Division 8. This season he has been coached by Connor Pullum, Don Cathey and our new and emerging Coach Chuck Bartkus. With the training at Chatuge Shores Golf Course with all these volunteer coaches, Riley earned a 2nd place Silver Medal in Golf Skills Competition. Congratulations to John and Barkus on your accomplishments. Riley plans to continue training throughout the year with the dedication and support of Coach Barkus, the generosity of Chatuge Shores Golf Course and The Club Shoppe in Murphy. SONC Clay County is grateful for all the community and volunteers that support us.
