Counterfeit money has hit the confines of Clay County, at least in the form of a few $100 bills.

On Saturday, Jan. 13 the Dollar General Store located on US Highway 64 west in Hayesville was given a counterfeit $100 bill.

In addition, the Clay County Transfer Station on Hinton Center Road in Hayesville was also given a counterfeit $100 bill, according to a release from Clay County Sheriff Mark Buchanan.

“These cases have been assigned to Clay County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Rebekah Snyder for follow-up. Surveillance cameras were in place at both locations and are currently being analyzed by Snyder,” Buchanan said. “Be especially aware when receiving any $100 bills until the person(s) responsible for these felonious frauds are arrested.”
