On April 3, Gov. Roy Cooper announced the appointment of the Honorable Tessa Sellers to the N.C. Superior Court in Judicial District 43A, serving Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Macon and Swain counties. She will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable William H. Coward.
Sellers currently serves as a district court judge in North Carolina’s 43rd Judicial District. Previously, she served as an assistant district attorney in North Carolina’s 30th Prosecutorial District and as a general practitioner in private practice. Sellers received her Bachelor of Arts from Mars Hill College and her Juris Doctor from Campbell University’s Norman A. Wiggins School of Law.
“Judge Tessa Sellers brings a variety of legal expertise to the Superior Court and she has served North Carolina and her community with distinction for many years,” said Cooper. “I appreciate her willingness to step up and keep working for the people of our state in this new role.”
Sellers will appear on the November general election ballot to run unopposed for this superior court seat in Judicial District 43A.
This Superior Court appointment will leave a vacancy in Sellers’ current district court seat in North Carolina’s 43rd Judicial District. Accordingly, the executive committees of the affected county’s political parties will meet shortly to choose a nominee to appear on the general election ballot for this seat. It is hoped that Cooper will then appoint that nominee to fill the vacant district court seat for the time remaining prior to the November election. The 43rd Judicial District Court seat serves Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties.
The Clay County Republican Party would like to express our pride in and congratulations to Clay County native Judge Tessa Sellers as she expands and continues her selfless public service with this new career accomplishment.
