After weathering years of industry downturns, Chatuge Shores Golf Course is thriving and committed to fostering the next generation of golfers through community-focused initiatives.
A decade ago, the golf industry faced widespread closures. Yet, Chatuge Shores Golf Course persevered. Today, the course stands debt-free, with surging player numbers and rebuilt financial reserves. Investments in excellence include hiring an agronomy consultant, upgrading equipment and staff, and implementing long-term improvement plans to ensure sustained quality.
Owned and operated by the Clay County Rural Development Authority, a separate and distinct entity from Clay County Government, the course is guided by a dedicated board: President Tony Wiegold, Vice President; Dwight Penland; Dr. Rob Peck; Randy Nichols and Charles Penland. Day to day operations are under the watchful eye of Bill Rinaldo, General Manager.
The current board was assembled in the spring of 2023 at a time of tension and turmoil as to the future of the facility. With a commitment to maintaining Chatuge Shores in alignment with the initial vision of the RDA, attention was focused on strengthening business practices and enhancing the overall experience. In a spirit of gratitude, the authority is now reinvesting in the community that supported it.
Chatuge Shores proudly hosts five local school golf teams — Hayesville, Murphy, Towns County, Robbinsville and Young Harris College — for free practices, team matches and tournaments throughout the year. This season, they've introduced an exciting new junior policy to make golf more accessible. Local high school students can walk the course for free when space allows or ride with a cart for just $20. Juniors from outside the area can play alongside an adult for $20, whether walking or riding.
These efforts underscore Chatuge Shores' role as a community cornerstone, blending business success with meaningful outreach. For details, visit: chatugeshoresgolf.com or contact the pro shop at (828) 389-8940.
