Hayesville’s Wes Jennings and Rhett Sellers combined for 18 points as the JV Yellow Jackets roared to a 23-2 first-quarter lead Friday.
The supporting cast took over from there.
Francisco Rios had the hot hand in the second quarter as the Jackets extended their dominance to 29-4.
Jennings led all scorers with 12 markers, while Sellers added six on a pair of first-quarter treys before ‘Mr. Inside’ and ‘Mr. Outside’ dressed for the varsity nightcap.
Byron Engelmann tallied five points in limited playing time. He also played — and scored — in the varsity win over Rosman.
Cherokee 44, Hayesville 34
Hayesville commanded a 15-7 first-quarter advantage but couldn’t maintain supremacy at Cherokee last Tuesday.
The Braves pulled ahead in the second quarter for a 23-17 lead at the break.
Hayesville fought back and was within four by the end of third but couldn’t unseat the Braves in the final stanza.
Jennings and Sellers again led the way with 12 points apiece. Both cleaned the glass as well. Jennings snared five rebounds, as did Eli Cheeks, while Sellers cleared four caroms.
Cheeks also pumped in eight markers.
