Chad McClure reports that Hayesville’s JV football team is off to good start and he should know since he’s coaching both the JV’s and varsity teams this season.
The junior Jackets earned approval from McClure and his staff last week during a no admission scrimmage with visiting Andrews at Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium.
“I was really pleased,” McClure remarked. “I felt like the kids played with a lot of energy and excitement in their first outing. I’m excited about this group.”
Specifically, McClure liked how his JV’s performed at the line of scrimmage. “Up front we blocked well and we were able to complete some passes and we tackled well. We got a lot of people to the ball.”
Speaking of “a lot of people,” Hayesville has plenty of bodies. There are 31 players on the roster – all eighth graders and freshmen.
Hayesville’s first real test comes Thursday against Swain at Smoky Mountain High School in Sylva. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
McClure is counting on his assistant coaches Kyle Chastain, wide receivers, defensive backs; Kenneth Dockery, linebackers, offensive line; Jon Hensley, quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs; Tyler Ledford, linemen; Blake McClure, backs; Ethan Taylor, linebackers; Logan Thurmond; linebackers, JV defense; Zach White, linemen and Colby White, linemen and JV offense, to assist with coaching both teams.
