Hayesville’s JV football team displayed a ‘never say die’ determination in the season-opening game at Swain on Thursday, Aug. 21.

The junior Jackets battled the Maroon Devils to a scoreless tie after three quarters and then matched their hosts with a touchdown and two-pointer in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Hayesville also matched a Swain touchdown in overtime before the Devils prevailed, 20-14, in double over time.

The Jackets got on the scoreboard with a safety. Caden McClure broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown to tie the game 8-all. Luke Buckner ran for a five-yarder to complete Hayesville’s scoring.

Head Coach Chad McClure, who is coaching both HHS football teams this year, says he has been impressed with the JV’s efforts.

He’s expecting big things, especially from quarterbacks Luke Buckner and Brady Gerdes; running backs Brett Hanna, Carson Finn, Caden McClure and Bentley Everette; wide receiver Ethan Beechum; linemen Karson Hughes, Tucker Moore, Brock Garrett, Jack Bethel, Jamie Cowart, Mason Parker, Devin Ramey, Jake Frentz; and tight ends Dustin Lockaby and E.J. Hughes.

The JV Jackets (0-1) travel to Cherokee on Thursday, Aug. 28.
