Wins have been few and far between for Hayesville’s young softball team but the girls continue to work hard and improve.

“The goal is to be competitive,” remarked Hayesville Coach Marissa Peck.

The Lady Jackets were certainly competitive last week.

Wednesday

Cherokee 12, Hayesville 2

Jasmine Brooks gave Hayesville a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when she singled, advanced on a fielder’s choice and came around to score.

Cherokee responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the opening inning, but Hayesville answered with another tally in the second when Danielle Anderson sliced a single to right, reached second when Maddie Graves walked and scored on Lillie McClure’s RBI single. The rally ended when Graves was called out trying to score.

The Lady Braves broke the game open with 4 runs in the third inning and 4 more in the fourth.

Brooks led Hayesville with 2 hits.

“We did not hit the ball well against their pitching and also had some base running errors that halted our momentum,” Peck said.

Friday

Murphy 16-0

The Lady Jackets had four hits, but no one made it home.

Brooks and McClure cracked two of Hayesville’s four hits, but Murphy had 9 safeties and benefited from six errors.

Graves and Callie Long also singled for Hayesville.

“Callie Long, Maddie Graves, Lillie McClure and Jasmine Brooks had hits but offensively we didn't hit well enough to bring them around,” Peck said. “We are continuing to work on cutting down errors; getting quality at bats as well as making the routine plays as we look toward conference leader Robbinsville on Tuesday.”

The Lady Jackets, 1-9, hosted Robbinsville and will entertain Andrews on Thursday, travel to Robbinsville on Friday, and play at Copper Basin on Monday.
