The Hayesville Middle School Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team was victorious over Murphy, 38-33, in the first game of the second half of the season. ‘Just stand back and watch’ was the name of the game as the Lady Jackets stayed on the heels of the Lady Bulldogs in a tough fought game.
According to coach Tammy Dills, “After the first quarter we opened a 10-5 lead on Murphy.” This was short lived as the Lady Bulldogs came back and outscored the Jackets 8-7 in second quarter and taking a 17-13 lead.
“Ava Moore was showing her floor strength on the inside of the paint with 13 of the 17 for the first half,” said Dills.
The Lady Jackets didn’t stand still and came out strong in the third quarter with Shook and Briley Clampitt taking control of the third quarters with 14 points.
At the end of the third, Hayesville led 31-22. A 9-point cushion wasn't secure as Murphy battled back.
With three minutes to go, the heat was on and Hayesville called timeout to regain their composure. “Emma Ashe came out and busted a jumper to put us back up by 4, then late in the quarter went 2 for 3 from the line to help secure the win,” Dills said.
Coach Dills commented, "Points don't always show how hard a player works during a game. My players came out and worked. From the bench talking and cheering on the boards, defensively. Yes, some players scored more than others, but someone has to recognize those players have a good opportunity of hitting a shot for our team. That is teamwork," Dills concluded.
