Usually, yellow jackets are the ones being swatted, but on the baseball diamond, it’s the Jackets who are becoming the kings of swat. Hayesville’s varsity team improved their record to 5-0 with a 9-o win over Hiwassee Dam Tuesday, May 11 followed by a 10-1 victory against Murphy Friday, May 14.
Against the Eagles in Hiwassee Dam, Jeremy Stewart and Clayton Vandiver were the standout players for Hayesville. At the plate, Stewart went 2-4 with two homeruns and 4 RBIs. Vandiver was dominant on the mound with one hit, no walks and nine strikeouts over four innings.
Sophomore Avery Leatherwood was the man of the hour in Murphy. In five trips to the plate, Leatherwood belted three hits for 4 RBI’s and scored a pair of runs. Senior Connor Bradley was perfect in the batter’s box, going 3-3 and drawing a walk.
Stewart was the winning pitcher, throwing all seven innings, giving up 1 run on two hits while walking one and striking out eight.
Hayesville will be home Friday, May 21 against Rosman. On Tuesday, May 25 the Jackets will welcome the Andrews Wildcats. Both games are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
