E.J. Abrams had the hot hand in the first half and Peyton McGaha had toasty mitts after the intermission as Hayesville’s JV boys upended visiting Andrews, 47-30, in a Smoky Mountain Conference clash Friday.
Abrams tossed in 9 first-half markers and McGaha scored 10 of his game-high 12 points in the final two quarters.
The Yellow Jackets bolted to a 29-18 halftime lead and then blitzed their guests with 8 unanswered points in the first 3:20 of the third act.
McGaha and Landon Trout lit the fuse that produced the run. Hughes had four rebounds and 4 points during the decisive third quarter, while McGaha grabbed four boards, made a steal and scored on a reverse lay-up, a bold dash into the lane and putback. McG scored those 6 points in a span of just :38 to cook Andrews.
Trout cleared seven boards in the second half, McGaha six.
Brady Reynolds added 9 points, Trout 6, Brandon Lynch 3 and Daemien Soto 2.
“I thought we responded well and played much better against Andrews — compared to the Robbinsville game. We had some good performances from different guys,” Hayesville Coach Zach Cottrell said.

Hayesville didn’t fare as well when Robbinsville visited last Tuesday.
The Yellow Jackets led 22-12 at the half, but the wheels came off after the intermission.
“I thought we played poorly against Robbinsville,” Cottrell stated. “Too many turnovers to be able to pull out a win.”
Reynolds led the JV jackets with 12 points and three offensive rebounds.
Trout posted 6 points and five offensive boards. McGaha tallied 7 points and four offensive rebounds.
Daemien Soto tallied 5 points, Abrams 4.
