Hayesville’s softball gals seek their second win Thursday at home against Andrews and another on the Wildcats’ diamond the following day.
The Lady Jackets hope to play as well as they did at Smoky Mountain last Wednesday, when the Clay County ladies showed spunk, determination and competitive fire in battling back to tie the hosts twice before falling short, 11-7.
The Lady Yellow Jackets smacked 11 hits, stole 10 bases and made just one fielding error while throwing a scare into the Mustangs.
Smoky Mountain led 4-0 after two innings, but Hayesville stormed back to tie the contest in the third and then grabbed the lead, 6-4, in the top of the fourth.
The Mustangs went ahead 7-6 in the bottom of the inning, but Hayesville rallied again and knotted the score at 7-all in the fifth. Smoky Mountain decided the outcome with 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Micalynn McClure led the Hayesville with three safeties that upped her already impressive batting average. She’s sitting at .529 entering this week’s games against Andrews. Mighty Mic also drove in two runs, had two stolen bases and scored.
Lucy Trout also swung a hot bat. The dependable freshman with a .367 batting average, cracked two hits, knocked in a run, swiped three bases and scored. Hayesville’s steady shortstop also had four assists and didn’t commit an error.
Trout wasn’t the only slick fielder — Brooklyn Smith and Danielle Anderson turned a double play.
Isabella Mintz also smacked two hits, stole a pair of bases and had an RBI and a run.
The Hayesville hit parade also featured singles by Caylee Martin, Daylyn Murray, Smith and Caroline Wade, who stole two bases.
Anderson, Martin, Mintz and Murray also scored a run each.
The near win was a breath of fresh air sandwiched between losses to more experienced teams.

The Lady Maroon Devils lived up to their 14-2 record with a 16-hit attack on Monday in Hayesville.
The Lady Jackets managed four hits off Swain ace Rylee Rawls.
Hiwassee Dam 16, Hayesville 6
McClure, Murray, Trout and Wade led a Hayesville comeback after Hiwassee Dam went up 15-1 Friday.
McClure slapped three hits, pilfered two bases and scored twice, Murray drove in three runs with a double and a single, Trout had two RBI's and two steals and Wade doubled and scored.
Anderson scored twice and contributed a hit. Smith added a single and an RBI.
Hayesville was hurt by fielding woes that resulted in seven unearned runs.

The Lady Jackets enjoyed a brief 1-0 lead when Mintz drove in Anderson before the Lady Eagles took control with an eight-run second inning last Tuesday.
McClure led Hayesville with a double, single and stolen base.
McClure and Wade allowed just three hits and two earned runs.
