Volleyball season is officially underway for the Lady Yellow Jackets of Hayesville Middle School. The squad started their chase for a championship Tuesday, Nov. 17 on the road against Martins Creek for a rare double-header. Hayesville loaded the bus and headed home with a 2-0 record after sweeping both matches. The road trip continued Thursday, Nov. 19 as the Lady Yellow Jackets travelled to Robbinsville where they were able to remain unbeaten, winning the match in two sets.

In Cherokee County, Hayesville squared off against the Lady Hornets of Martins Creek. Both teams had moments of greatness and also signs of early season rust. The Lady Jackets found their groove and was able to put Martins Creek away in the first match with a 25-15 score in the opening set and a 25-14 victory in set two.

The second match was more of the same with the road warriors again getting a 2-0 victory by winning the first set 25-13 and taking set two 25-17.

Following the matches, head coach Laurie Shook said, “We definitely have some work to do. There are areas where we didn’t execute, but it’s good to finally get things going.”

Against Robbinsville, the Lady Jackets had their hands full. The Lady Knights matched Hayesville volley for volley in the opening set. The two foes went back and forth, failing to win due to the “must win by 2 points” rule. Finally, Hayesville was able to grab the momentum and take the first set 30-28. The Lady Jackets rode the wave through the second set, winning 25-19 which improved their record to 3-0.

Following the Thanksgiving holiday, the team will return to action on Tuesday, Dec.1 when they host Cherokee. COVID-19 restrictions will limit the number of attendees. Fans can watch the action on YouTube via the “Clay County Schools” channel.
