Road losses for volleyball

Hayesville’s varsity volleyball team’s up and down season continued last week with a pair of Smoky Mountain Conference matches. The Lady Jackets went to Robinsville Tuesday, Oct. 1 and returned home with a quick 3-0 loss. On Thursday, Oct. 3 Hayesville made their longest road trip of the season to Rosman. The Lady Jackets’ struggles continued and they dropped the match 3-0 to go 0-2 for the week.

In Robbinsville, the Lady Knights took the momentum early and kept a stranglehold throughout the match. Robbinsville won the opening set 25-12 to set the tone and followed that up by winning set two 25-12. Hayesville improved its performance in the third set but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Knights finished off the match with a 25-15 set-win.

Thursday’s match with the Lady Tigers of Rosman picked up where Tuesday’s match ended. The Lady Jackets struggled to put together a string of scores and Rosman pulled away to take set one 25-13. In set two, the Lady Tigers continued to take advantage of scoring opportunities and won the set 25-12. Hayesville found its fight in set three as they went toe-to-toe and score for score with the Lady Tigers. The would-be comeback ended when Rosman hit the 25-point mark to win the set and the match.

Hayesville will look to work their way back up the SMC standings when they host Hiwassee Dam Thursday, Oct. 10. The Lady Jackets will then head to Andrews on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for their final road match of the regular season. A 6 p.m. start time is set for both matches.
