The date for the 2020 Bethel-Guidry College Schol- arship Golf Tournament will be Saturday, Sept. 26 at Mountain Harbour Golf Club in Hayesville. This event raises funds for deserving high school graduates from Clay County and Towns County, Ga. to attend the university, college, or voca- tional school of their choice.
The Golf Tournament is an initiative of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Hayesville. The Bethel-Guidry Foundation is named for the church’s former deacon, Turner Guidry and his wife Georgia Bethel, who have worked tirelessly as teachers and mentors for the youth of our area over the last several decades.
Approximately 10 area youth have received financial assistance for their entire college education through this event’s efforts over the past few years. This year, we know things have been hard on all of us, but we are hoping that we can continue to reward these deserving young people with some financial assistances in these troubling times. To ensure its success and guarantee that the Class of 2020’s chosen scholars are rewarded, the event is putting out the annual call for sponsorships, participants and volunteers.
Event Co-Chairmen Sanford Freeman and I urge individuals, businesses or other groups of interested citizens to step forward as golf tournament sponsors. Sponsorship levels range from $100 to $500 with exciting benefits available at each level. In addition to the standard levels, sponsors can opt to support contests such as the Hole In One and Putting Contests or un- derwrite the Refreshment Cart or Golfer Continental Breakfast.
Although we know some of us have had a tough 2020 due to the virus, we want to continue the tradition of of- fering financial assistance to deserving young people who want to further their educa- tion. We will be practicing safe protocols as set forth by the Golf Club. We hope that if you are a golfer, you will sign up and play. Even if you are not a golfer, help us out by being a sponsor or by donating some gifts for our golf gift bags. All proceeds will benefit a senior from both Clay and Towns county high schools.
All golfers are welcome, whether they come to play golf individually or as part of a team. Participation is not limited to Good Shepherd members only. Individual participation to play in the tournament costs $100 per person as an entry fee and includes a Golfer Continental Breakfast, range balls, gift bag and a to go box lunch provided by the Holy Smok- ers. Additional to go boxes are available for $20 each.
All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Bethel-Guidry Foundation. Last year’s golf tournament raised $22,000 for the Bethel Guidry Foundation, and its many sponsors were a large reason for the success. They included 131 businesses and individuals too numerous to list here but all essential to this worthy cause.
