Hayesville High School men’s soccer team finally got to start the season Thursday, Sept. 26 in Murphy. Scheduling issues meant the Jackets did not get to play any non-conference match to prepare for a Smoky Mountain Conference title run. Instead, Hayesville jumped right into SMC play and came away with a 3-1 win over their rival.
It didn’t take long for the Jackets to strike as Will Gordon stopped the clock with a goal in under a minute. Hayesville extended its lead in the first half with a pair of goals of the foot of Ryelan Snowden. The Bulldogs managed to get on the board in the second half but weren’t able to make a serious challenge.
Head coach Karen Dudley was glad to start with a victory but stressed the importance of continuing to work hard. “It was a great start to our season. As with any first game we saw some areas we need to work on but the team is passing and moving the ball around well. They are working as a team which will make all the difference as we continue our season.”
The Jackets will be at home to host the Swain County Maroon Devils at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7.
