Western Carolina head women's tennis Coach Bret Beaver today announced the fall 2021and spring 2022 schedule. The slate of contests includes a fall home tournament and nine home matches in the spring.
“I am very excited about our upcoming fall tournament schedule and the matches coming up in the spring,” said Beaver. “We have a very strong group of returning players along with some very talented new players.”
The Catamounts will play a total of three fall matches ahead of the spring campaign. It all kicks off this weekend at the Emily McNall Classic Sept. 25-26, followed up by the WCU Fall Classic Oct. 2-3. Fall play concludes at the ITA Regionals Oct. 21-25 hosted by Wake Forest.
Western Carolina begins the spring season on Jan. 17 when the team hosts Lenoir-Rhyne to open 2022. The Catamounts will also welcome Tusculum (Feb. 4), Appalachian State (Feb. 27), Lees-McRae (Mar. 12), UNC Asheville (Mar. 17), and Davidson (April 9) in non-conference action.
The Catamounts will play 10 non-conference matches on the road.
After WCU’s season-opening home match, WCU travels to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Clemson on Jan. 22. Other non-conference road matches include; Kennesaw State (Jan. 29), Gardner-Webb (Feb. 5), Wake Forest (Feb. 6), South Carolina State (Feb. 12), Presbyterian (Feb. 13), North Carolina Central (Mar. 6), N.C. Central (Mar. 6), Alabama A&M (Mar. 27), and Alabama State (April 2).
WCU begins Southern Conference play on the road on Feb. 18 at ETSU. Western Carolina will also travel to Chattanooga (Mar. 20), UNCG (Mar. 5), and Samford (April 1) for conference matches. The Catamounts will host Furman (April 5), Wofford (April 8), and Mercer (April 14) in conference home matches.
The 2022 Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Championship will be held April 22-24 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Western Carolina welcomes back seven players including redshirt seniors Jordyn King and Anna Uljanov, seniors Hoda Habib, Julia Pezzuco and Jacy Smith, and sophomores Antonella Benavides and Kata Foldeak. Miray Konar and Angela Perez are newcomers for the 2021-22 season and rookie Luzia Obermeier will join the team in spring 2021.
“The team has been doing a great job in the classroom, on the court, and in the weight room,” Beaver said. “I am excited to see how the team develops and progresses throughout the spring through their hard work and focus.”
