Hayesville High School wrestling coach Mark Modica took his team across the state line Friday, Dec. 13 for “Friday Night Fights” which was hosted by Union County High School in Blairsville. At the end of the night, the Yellow Jackets found themselves in the silver medal spot on the podium.
The marathon event saw Hayesville take down a trio of local rivals. The Jackets got off to a strong start with a 46-36 win over Union County. Against Towns County, Hayesville’s score improved and they were victorious over the Indians 60-21. When the Jackets faced off with their chief rival Murphy, the Bulldogs were unable to match Hayesville’s intensity and the Jackets picked up the 54-24 win. Hayesville’s success put them in the finals against White County, Ga. It was a close battle, one where the Jackets came up short with a 42-39 loss.
On an individual level, Hayesville wrestlers had a solid night. Both Kevin Cook and Zane Lucksavage earned their 14th win of the season while Adam Cook and Ethan Taylor each got their eighth victory.
The team will head to Rosman Thursday, Dec. 19 to compete in a tri-meet before taking time off for the Christmas break.
