Yellow Jackets grab two out of three conference wins

   Hayesville’s  varsity baseball team skunked the Cherokee Braves 16-0 on Tuesday, April 26 in a conference match-up.   

The Jackets slammed their way through the bases, scoring 4 runs in the first inning, then grabbing 11 additional runs in the other three innings of the game.

   Scoring runs for the Jackets were Dakota Matheson, 4 runs; Mason Cook, 1 run; Braxton Cherry, 2 runs; Cade Curuso, 1 run; Avery Leatherwood, 2 runs; Kyle Lunsford, 1 run; Cade Denton, 1 run, 4 RBIs; Kendall Boyer, 1 run; Mike Mauney, 1 run, 2 RBIs; and Tate Roberts, 2 runs.

   Two days later on April 28, the Jackets hosted Swain in another conference game, but fell short of the win 10-4. Scoring the runs for Hayesville were Cherry, 2 runs and 2 RBIs; Cook, 2 runs; Roberts, 1 run; and Lunsford 1 RBI.

   There was no rest for the Jackets, on April 29 when Hayesville packed up and traveled to Cherokee for their third conference game of the week. The Jackets turned their game play strategy around from the day before and defeated the Braves 16-7 for their second conference win of the week.

   Cherokee took the lead in the first inning with 1 a score of 1-0. Hayesville bounced back scoring 2 runs in the second inning, grabbing a 2-1 which they never lost. The third inning saw 4 additional runs from the Jackets who found themselves sitting in an outstanding to win.

  However, it wasn’t until the sixth inning that either team crossed home plate again. The Jackets were outscored by the Braves in the sixt, 6-4, but still held the lead 10-7. It was Hayesville’s game in the final inning and the  Jackets added 6 runs for the 16-7 win.

   High scorers included Chance Hughes with 3 runs and 1 RBI; Kendall Boyer, 3 runs and 1 RBI; and Kyle Lunsford, 3 runs and 1 RBI. Also scoring runs for the Jackets were: Cherry, 1 run, 2 RBIs; Matheson, 1 run; Dawson Devane, 1 run; Leatherwood, 1 run, 1 RBI; Cook, 1 run, 2 RBIs; and Denton, 2 runs.

   The Jackets hold a 10-2 conference record as they prepare to take on the Murphy Bulldogs who are 12-5. Hayesville will travel to Murphy on Tuesday, May 3 and then host the Bulldogs on Thursday, May 5.
