Heritage Day Returns to the Folk Art Center

The 41st annual Heritage Day will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18  at the Blue Ridge Parkway’s Folk Art Center. The free celebration of mountain heritage is held by the Southern Highland Craft Guild and features demonstrations of traditional crafts accompanied by music.

Sam Uhl, owner and memoirist of "The Cheerful Word," www.cheerfulword.com, will be the guest reader for Mountain Wordsmiths at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 26. This event, sponsored by North Carolina Writers’ Network-West, is being held via Zoom because of COVID concerns.

State Supreme Court sees four more 4-3 party-line splits

After splitting along party lines just twice in their first six months together, the current lineup of the N.C. Supreme Court has produced four more 4-3 partisan splits today. Democrats hold the one-seat majority on the state's highest court.

Covid cases once again stressing hospitals

"Flatten the curve" abruptly became a household phrase at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Almost a year and a half later, the United States is once again scrambling to halt rapidly-rising Covid cases due to the Delta variant.

County loses over 150,000 gallons of water from major leak

Even when caught quickly, a water leak can add up to significant financial loss. Clay County Water & Sewer Director Dusty Beal said a major leak occurred on July 31 at Truett Baptist Church on Highway 64 Business, costing his department several tens of thousands of dollars.
