Getting to know Hayesville's Teachers of the Year

The tradition of Clay County teachers choosing peers to represent their respective schools as Teacher of the Year continues. From those chosen, one special teacher is named Clay County Schools’ District Teacher of the Year which takes the person to a regional competition.

County budget tops $20 million

Clay County Commissioners approved a $20 million-plus budget during a public hearing June 29 and it includes good news for taxpayers. The property tax rate will not increase and remains at .43 mils per $100 valuation, according to the budget report provided by County Manager Debbie Mauney.

Enchanted Music on the Square put on hold

The Summer Concert Series on the Hiawassee Town Square has had to be suspended until Aug. 15, due to group gathering restrictions put in place by the state of Georgia. At this point in time, plans are in place for the concerts to resume on Saturday, Aug.

Jones is District Teacher of the Year

Bobbie Jones has been named Clay County Schools District Teacher of the Year. During the recognition section of the Clay County Board of Education meeting held Thursday evening, June 25, Schools Superintendent Dale Cole recognized all teachers of the year.

Apartments in planning stage

PDI architect Sheldon Lovelace presented a drawing of an apartment building during the Hayesville Board of Adjustment meeting held Thursday, June 25. The developer plans 100 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms.

COVID cases rise in state

North Carolina remains in phase 2 of its reopening period and as of June 24, it became mandatory to wear face coverings in public when social distancing is not possible, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fireworks set for Saturday

      The July Fourth fireworks display is on track for Saturday night, according to Clay County Chamber of Commerce Director Pam Roman. However, the location has changed from Hayesville to Brasstown.

Fireworks are on

Clay County Fireworks are on this year. Many thanks to this year's sponsors for stepping up to continue this great community tradition. Fireworks will be held at the Clay County Ball Fields. There will not be a parade or any activities on the square.
