Teen found, woman faces abduction charge

 A 39-year-old Hayesville woman was arrested last week in Tennessee on a felony child abduction charge that originated in Clay County. Rebecca Michelle Jones was taken into custody about a 135 miles from Hayesville by the Clinton Police Department.

Good news for Care Center

Families of Clay County Care Center can collectively breathe a sigh of relief, at least for now. Th second facility-wide testing since the COVID-19 outbreak revealed no positive cases among the 172 residents and staff members.

Shoring up plans for start of school

A survey sent to parents of Hayesville students is helping school leadership craft a plan for daily operations when school opens Aug. 17.  “We are crunching numbers from the parent survey and calling additional homes that did not answer the survey,” said Superintendent Dale Cole.

Graduation set for July 24

Graduation for the class of 2020 will take place Friday, July 24 at 6 p.m. in Frank R. Long Memorial Stadium on the Hayesville High School campus, according to an announcement from the school. Rain dates are Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26.

The school year will look much different as Clay County and the state function under reopening guidelines. Clay County Schools will be open for business Aug. 17 and there are still technicalities to work out. Parents will be receiving a survey in the next week or so.

Schools will re-open

Clay County and other schools will open for in-person instruction Aug. 17 under an updated Plan B, according to an announcement made by Gov. Roy Cooper during Tuesday’s news conference. The plan also offers remote learning options.

Small Town Main Street continues planning events

It was quiet around the Hayesville square on Friday, July 3 to start the holiday weekend but Nocturnal Brewing, Angelo's, and Black Dog Tavern were open for inside dining or take out.
