Jerry Smith has been collecting cars most of his life. Now he simply wants to share his passion with as many people as possible. Smith and his wife, June, own Memory Lane Classic Car Museum, located beside the VIP Fieldstone 6 movie theater, midway between Young Harris and Hiawassee, Ga.

Even though it was officially National School Social Work Week, March 7-13, social workers are always doing an important job in the community. Terri Hager prefers not to call herself a social worker, but she plays an imperative role in helping Clay County students and their families.

Narcan distribution set for Saturday

When Stephanie Almeida, of Smoky Mountain Harm Reduction, heard Clay County and the surrounding areas had several accidental overdose deaths in less than two weeks, she knew she needed to do something.

More restrictions set to be lifted

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Tuesday that the state will continue to ease some COVID-19 restrictions. Executive Order No. 204 will take effect on Friday at 5 p.m. and is set to expire April 30. The state’s general mask mandate remains in effect.

Changes in store for 2021-22 school calendar

Clay County Schools’ 2021-22 calendar will have a slightly different look than usual.

In-person learning expands

Clay County students in grades 6-12 will be able to return to the classroom four days per week as early as Monday. The Clay County Board of Education approved the decision during a called meeting on Monday.

WCU to resume ‘normal operations’ this fall

Western Carolina University is moving forward with plans to resume as close to normal operations this fall, given the current COVID-19 trends and projections and as WCU’s clinic is helping to vaccinate the Western North Carolina region.

Glidewell named EMC general manager

Allan Glidewell has been named general manager of Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation, according to a March 9 announcement from Blue Ridge EMC’s board of directors. Glidewell brings more than 23 years experience in the utility industry working primarily in electric cooperatives.
