VFDs consolidating

Clay County's four fire departments will soon merge into one. Clay County Fire and Rescue will absorb the volunteer fire departments in Warne, Brasstown and Shooting Creek, officials announced during the Clay County Commission meeting on Thursday, Feb. 4 at the Clay County Government Center.

Death toll increases in county

Clay County's COVID-19 death toll took a sharp spike in the course of five days. Clay County Health Department announced the deaths of nine residents between Friday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, Feb. 2, including eight more residents at Clay County Care Center.

Matheson held without bond

Initially he fought it, but Charles Jason Matheson waived extradition to Georgia on Tuesday and is being housed in the Towns County Detention Center without bond. He also faces three felony charges for allegedly shooting his wife, Crystal Dawn Matheson, Jan.

COVID-19 death toll is rising in Clay County

Clay County's COVID-19 death toll has risen to 11 after the deaths of three more residents at Clay County Care Center. Clay County Health Department said two of the individuals were in their 80s and a third was more than 90 years old. All three suffered from pre-existing health conditions.

McConnells blessed by communities’ support

When the Shooting Creek home of Stanley and Kathy McConnell burned to the ground on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, the couple never dreamed how much they would end up feeling blessed. Those blessings are helping them get through losing the home they built together 38 years ago.

COVID forces campus-wide school closing

Clay County Schools will be closed until Monday, Feb. 8 due to several cases of COVID-19 among staff and students.
