School board makes face masks optional

By a 3-1 vote, the Clay County Board of Education chose to eliminate its face mask requirement for Clay County Schools during a special called meeting on Monday in Hayesville. The ruling became effective on Tuesday.

Collaborative antibody clinic a 'life saver'

Clay County ambulances were sometimes sitting at hospitals for several hours at a time during the month of September, waiting for a bed to open up for a new patient.

Five Year Wildfire Anniversary

Five years ago, Clay County’s mountains were burning. For several weeks, the air was thick with smoke as flames consumed tens of thousands of acres in western North Carolina. It was a frightening time for area residents, but also a time when they came together.

General Assembly releases N.C. budget plan, including input from Cooper

The N.C. General Assembly will begin votes Tuesday on the newly-released 2021-23 conference budget. The 2021-22 budget plan of $25.9 billion represents a 4.3% increase over the previous plan. The fiscal 2022-23 portion of the biennial plan is $27 billion, and the state’s rainy day fund grows to $4.

Operation Christmas Child continues despite rising costs, supply chain issues

Rampant inflation, supply chain issues, and the COVID-19 pandemic aren’t dampening the Christmas spirit at the international Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse. Volunteers are hard at work this week collecting shoeboxes filled with gifts for needy children across the globe.
