County budget tops $20 million

Clay County Commissioners approved a $20 million-plus budget during a public hearing June 29 and it includes good news for taxpayers. The property tax rate will not increase and remains at .43 mils per $100 valuation, according to the budget report provided by County Manager Debbie Mauney.

Jones is District Teacher of the Year

Bobbie Jones has been named Clay County Schools District Teacher of the Year. During the recognition section of the Clay County Board of Education meeting held Thursday evening, June 25, Schools Superintendent Dale Cole recognized all teachers of the year.

PDI architect Sheldon Lovelace presented a drawing of an apartment building during the Hayesville Board of Adjustment meeting held Thursday, June 25. The developer plans 100 apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms.

COVID cases rise in state

North Carolina remains in phase 2 of its reopening period and as of June 24, it became mandatory to wear face coverings in public when social distancing is not possible, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fireworks set for Saturday

      The July Fourth fireworks display is on track for Saturday night, according to Clay County Chamber of Commerce Director Pam Roman. However, the location has changed from Hayesville to Brasstown.

N.C. Driver’s License COVID-19 options

Need to renew a driver’s license? Clay County’s mobile driver’s license office has been suspended indefinitely, along with all North Carolina mobile driver’s license offices. Clay County residents who need a license will need to choose another option.

New school, others vandalized

A Hayesville man was arrested Tuesday, June 23 for vandalism to the new Clay County Primary School on Yellow Jacket Drive, as well other buildings around Clay County.
