Annual memorial concert benefits local scholarship

The annual variety benefit concert which supports the Madelyn Lea Memorial Scholarship will be a virtual event this year. Available on the Hayesville First United Methodist Church Facebook page at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, the concert will be available for sharing.

Trick or Treat on Square cancelled

The Hayesville Town Council voted to cancel Trick or Treat Around the Square per the recommendation of Hayesville Mayor Harry Baughn. “I personally cannot see any way under the governor’s restrictions we can have Trick Or Treat Around the Square,” Baughn said.

‘When the world stopped turning’

At 8:46 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001 hijackers on American Airlines Flight 11 crashed a plane into the World Trade Center, killing all on board and hundreds inside the building.

Third resident dies from COVID

A third Clay County resident has died from COVID-19 related complications, according to a release from the Clay County Health Department’s Facebook page. The death was reported Tuesday, Sept. 15.

COVID on campuses

While COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on school systems nationwide, there are not many public reports about the impact to college campuses. Meanwhile, more than 1,400 Young Harris College students were notified over Labor Day weekend that all classes will become virtual until at least Monday, Sept. 21.

Rec center open to public

As of Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Clay County Recreation Center and gym are open to the public. The re-opening was brought on by Gov. Cooper’s announcement last week that the state was moving to Safer at Home phase 2.5.

Spotlight on essential workers of REACH

Highway construction on track in county

With two of Clay County’s major highways, N.C. Highway 69 and N.C. Highway 175, undergoing road construction, it seems like a lot of the county has roadwork happening.
