Hinton Rural Life Center awarded People in Need grant

Hinton Rural Life Center of Hayesville, has been awarded a People in Need grant of $16,745 from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. The funds will be used for Hinton’s WNC Rural Poverty Project, which will create a poverty simulation specific to the unique aspects of rural life.

DA preparing for cancer treatments

District Attorney Ashley Hornsby Welch on Monday announced that she has breast cancer and is undergoing medical treatment. “I wanted to publicly share the information to raise awareness about the importance of early detection,” Welch said.

COVID: First hand

When Karen Rogers was first diagnosed with COVID-19 in April, she never imagined her symptoms would persist seven months later. “I am still coughing, have limited taste, the driest skin ever and my hair is falling out like it never has,” the Hiawassee woman said this weekend.

The annual Shop Small Shop Local event is more important this year than ever before and local businesses need our help. American Express has an ad campaign promoting Small Business Saturday on Nov.  28 and an additional big day to shop has been added locally.

Primary school opens

Improvements to North Carolina Highway 69 started full force a few months ago. While some local residents have complained about the dangers caused by the road construction, others say the work is being done quickly and the highway is not usually busy.

A Clay County woman who died after a single-car accident Wednesday evening is remembered as warm, sweet, a good cook and a Saints football fan. Malisa Karajulles Moffat, 48, was traveling east on Bob Penland Road, about a mile from her home, around 5:30 p.m.

Leonardo Daniel Torres Barios, 25, of Young Harris, has been with charged “interference with custody,” in connection to a missing person investigation involving a local teenager, Towns County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Terry Conner said Friday.

Streets getting make-over, arrows will direct traffic

New stripes will soon highlight parking spaces in downtown Hayesville. On Monday, Hayesville Town Council approved the $2,405 project quote for Pro Stripe of Blairsville to paint new stripes in town.
