Municipal election appears to be uncontested

By Jared Putnam Staff Writer   The Hayesville mayoral and town council elections are shaping up to be light on campaigning this fall. Each of the four outcomes appear to be little more than a formality, as the July 16 filing deadline passed with only one candidate running for each position.

Festival dubbed ‘Best ever’

Clouds threatened most of the weekend, but for the most part the sun won out and crowds flocked to the weekend’s Festival on the Square in Hayesville. The 40th year turned out to be what many vendors and attendees described as “one of the best,” for crowd size and vendor sales.

After 32 years of guiding Community Newspapers Inc., co-owners Tom Wood and Dink NeSmith are turning over the corporate leadership to new co-chief executive officers.  Effective Thursday, July 8, longtime chief financial officer and vice president Mark Major will replace NeSmith as president.

Deputy seriously injured in scuffle

The situation easily could have ended with a fatality. A Cherokee County sheriff’s deputy is expected to undergo surgery this week to repair a severed knee tendon suffered during an attack by a local resident. Sgt.

Filing still open for town council, mayor

The Town of Hayesville will have a new mayor-elect in  November. After overseeing the town since 2013, incumbent Hayesville Mayor Harry Baughn has decided not to run for reelection as mayor; however he is seeking a seat on the board.

Trash to Treasure Final Clearance

HHI volunteers must close the 2021 fundraiser with clearance prices located at 74 Sanderson Street in downtown Hayesville. Discounts begin on Thursday July 15 and will continue through Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. when the sale event ends.

Registration opens for photo contest at the fair

The annual photography contest at the Georgia Mountain Fair in Hiawassee begins Tuesday, Aug. 17 and lasts during the remainder of the fair. There is no entry fee, but money-prizes are given in several categories, covering 31 winning photos. Prize money totals $1,075.
