Community invited to join prevention

You may have seen some of them around town, at local events, wearing black t-shirts with the logo People of Clay C.A.R.E. For a few years, they have been working to increase substance misuse prevention efforts for the local community in several ways.

North Carolina state trooper Charlie Cheeks acknowledges that public recognition is not the most comfortable position for him. The Clay County native joined the State Highway Patrol in 2008 and is accustomed to doing his job with little fanfare.

Author, woodworker featured guest for Writers’ Night Out

Author, poet and woodworker William Johnson Everett will be the featured guest for Writers’ Night Out on Zoom at 7 p.m. Friday, July 9. This monthly event, sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network-West, is being held online because of COVID. We hope to meet again in person this fall.

Festival on the Square returns

Clay County’s most fun-filled art weekend of the year has returned after a 2020 hiatus. Even better, the 2021 Festival on the Square is celebrating 40 years of art, music, and fun on Historic Hayesville Courthouse Square.

Beef Field Day event set in Brasstown

On Friday, July 16, at 2 p.m., a Beef Field Day will be held at Bass Hyatt’s farm in Brasstown. The purpose of the event will be to educate area farmers on the Akaushi breed and the Akaushi/Angus cross. Speakers will include Bass Hyatt, farm owner, Rep.

Japanese beetles begin laying their eggs in June

Japanese beetles, either you don’t have them and so don’t know much about them or you have them and are driven crazy every spring. I’m officially in full crazy mode come June.  Japanese beetles are an invasive species. Adult females lay eggs in the ground in June.
