Two traffic stops result in felony drug charges

Staff Reports   A Georgia woman was charged with felony possession after a May 12 traffic stop was conducted by the sheriff’s office in a follow-up to information they had received from a “concerned citizen.” Leanna Nicole Debruhl, 31, of Demorest, Ga.

By Mark Buchanan Clay County Sheriff   From Sept. 6 until Jan. 31 of 2022, Clay County Detention Center Lieutenant Donovan Burke assumed command of the Detention Center. Burke worked tirelessly to keep the detention center operating efficiently and safely despite being staffed at 3/4th capacity.
Ellen Engelmann, Hayesville High School art teacher, was chosen as HHS Teacher of the Year by her coworkers, HHS principal Stacey Overlin presented a certificate and flowers to her on behalf of the school.

By Lorrie Ross Staff Writer   Every year, the staff at each of the Clay County Schools, chooses one of their peers as Teacher of the Year. Staff from all of the schools selects the Clay County District Teacher of the Year.

Town Council backs building Outdoor Communities Program

By Lorraine Bennett Staff Writer   The Hayesville Town Council Monday threw its support behind the Building Outdoor Communities Program which is forging partnerships to advance outdoor community and economic development work across Clay County and western North Carolina.
Participants gather at the 22 flags symbolizing the number of veterans on average committing suicide each day. Saturday’s walk to raise suicide awareness generated solid participation from various members of the community including the sponsors’ American Legion Post 532, Clay Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office along with representation from Towns County law enforcement.

By Becky Long Publisher   A multitude of red, white and blue flags greeted participants and volunteers who numbered more than 90 during Saturdays’ 2.2-mile walk,  the highlight of a Suicide Prevention Campaign sponsored by the George Lee American Legion Post 532 in Hayesville.
