End of an era

By Becky Long Publisher   After more than three decades Clay County’s oldest fast-food restaurant closed it doors on Friday, Dec. 30. “We found out on Thursday and we closed on Friday,” said Manager Richard Gauthier.

New sheriff outlines the transition

By Becky Long Publisher   Sheriff Mark Buchanan has been on the job about two weeks and in addition to getting organized and setting in to his new office, he has had to deal with flu which kept him under the weather for several days.
The Hayesville Marching Band brought an upbeat holiday tempo to Saturday’s Hayesville Christmas Parade and proved to be one of the highlights of the event. The band was among a large number of participants in the 2022 parade which appears to have been the largest in its history.

Keeping Clay County’s homes safe from wildfire

By Lorrie Ross Staff Writer   Six years ago, tens of thousands of acres of western North Carolina were on fire, including parts of Clay County. More than 20 fires consumed a lot of woodlands, some meadows and a few structures in the region.

Sheriff Bobby Deese honored ahead of Dec. 5 retirement
