By Becky Long Publisher   Elda “Buck” Carney Jr. was a Purple Heart recipient for his role in the Vietnam War. However, most people in Clay County remember him as a beloved teacher and track coach at Hayesville High School. He died in 2008.

Penland celebrates 106 years

Ruth Ford Penland celebrated her 106 birthday on Monday, June 17, 2024. A luncheon was held with family and friends in her honor. Penland and her twin brother, Rex, were born June 19, 1918 to Edney and Bessie Sluder Ford at their grandparents George and Rena Bridges Ford’s home in Warne, N.C.
