Forest fires three years later

Three years ago, at the end of 2016, the western North Carolina mountains had finally stopped smoldering. Until then, over a period of several weeks which began in late October, about two dozen forest fires had burned tens of thousands of acres.

Photo ID may not be required to vote

By Lorrie Ross Staff Writer   North Carolina’s on again off again requirement for voters to show photo identification to vote is apparently being called off again. That means voters in the March primary will probably not need to show photo identification after all.

County introduces Diversion Program

Opioids have impacted countless lives, both locally and in neighboring communities. Yet, a new drug diversion program should decrease some of those negative effects, potentially reducing rates of incarceration, separation from family, overdose and even death.

Former Hayesville Yellow Jacket athlete and 1997 Hayesville High School graduate Julie Stackhouse is set to be inducted into the North Carolina High School Track and Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 in Winston Salem.

Géraud Barralon will perform a concert in honor of the release of his new CD, Trace du Poète on Saturday, Dec. 21. Free admission. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., concert is from 7-8 p.m. at the Peacock Performing Arts Center in Hayesville. Barralon comes from Ardèche in the Rhône-Alpes region of France.

Clay County has a secret many residents don’t know. The population of homeless people is increasing — even among kids. Many residents are not aware of this because they do not see the homeless sleeping on benches or under bridges, but there are more than one would think.

Parks may be regulated

RV and mobile home parks may have to abide by a new set of regulations in 2020 if an ordinance proposed during the Dec. 5 county commission meeting is approved. The ordinance would also apply to tiny home parks.
