Annual Maypole Dance and May Day Parade to be held

Folk School students, staff and community revel in our annual English tradition of the May Day Parade and Maypole Dance at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, April 30. If you want to join in the short parade, meet at Festival Barn. The procession begins at 11:45 a.m.

Mysteries by favorite authors just in at Moss Library

 Moss Memorial Library in Hayesville offers a diverse range of new arrivals each week. The library is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday. The latest mysteries on the library shelves: • David Baldacci's "Mercy." Fourth in the Atlee Pine series.

Evergreen foundation announces funding for WNC disability agencies

The Evergreen Foundation board of directors is accepting grant proposals for first quarter 2022-23. Proposals for this cycle are due by Monday, May 9. Grant proposals submitted via email should be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on May 9. Mailed proposals must also be postmarked by 5 p.m.

Daughters hosts state regent-election

It may have been snowing outside in Blairsville on Saturday, April 9 but inside the Union County Community Center the atmosphere was warm and hospitable. The chapter hosted Georgia State Society’s First Vice Regent and Regent-elect Betty Brown Harrah, of Fayetteville, Ga.
Artist Corrina Luckenbach, flanked by Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Chief Richard Sneed and representatives from multiple organizations, cuts the ribbon on her work. The original mural was painted in 1992 by then Boy Scout Matthew Smith. Smith’s father Stephen was in attendance of the ribbon cutting which was held on Tuesday, April 19.

While speaking, Chief Richard Sneed reminded the crowd that while nothing can be done about the past, it can still be respected and remembered.    Corrina Luckenbach waited until the ribbon cutting to put the final touches on the mural ­— her initials.
