State championship for a Jacket

The 2020-21 high school track season came to a close Friday, June 25 with the state championship event held at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro. Hayesville’s athletes went out on a high note with junior Jake McTaggart claiming the gold in the discus and silver in shot put.

Yellow Jackets qualify for state

Athletes from Hayesville High School travelled to Cherokee Friday, June 18 for the Western Regional track and field competition. The boys team had a strong performances which earned them a second place finish overall.

‘Flash’ puts on a clinic in Brasstown

Ray Cook and his staff at Tri County Racetrack in Brasstown welcomed the Outlaw Topless Late Model Series to the Tiger Pit Friday, June 18 along with drivers from all other regular divisions.  After several false starts, Ronnie Johnson claimed the lead.

Baseball season ends for Jackets

A historic season has come to a close for the varsity Yellow Jacket baseball team. The Jackets hosted Mountain Island Charter Thursday, June 17 for round two of the NCHSAA 1A state playoffs. The Jackets were ahead early, but failed to stay out front and eventually lost the game 12-9.
Lady Jackets Lakota Shelton, Lila Roberts, Emma Shook and Kaysen Krieger earned All-conference honorable mentions with runner-up finishes.

Yellow Jackets strong at conference meet

Smoky Mountain Conference schools gathered in Cherokee Wednesday, June 9 for the track and field conference championships. Hayesville athletes not only came away with strong performances in their events, but also with awards and recognitions from the conference.

Jackets victorious in round one

After dropping their regular season finale to Robbinsville 12-6 on Thursday, June 10, the Yellow Jackets of Hayesville High School opened the 1A baseball playoffs at home as a No. 1 seed when they hosted Christ the King High Catholic High School from Huntersville Tuesday, June 15.

Jackets defend home turf

Hayesville High School played host to Cherokee and Hiwassee Dam Tuesday, June 1 for the sixth track and field meet of the season. The final competition before the Smoky Mountain Conference championships saw Yellow Jacket athletes excel on their way to a sweep of the boys and girls divisions.

Racing fans filed through the Tri County Racetrack ticket gates Thursday, May 27 for a kickoff to the Memorial Day weekend. The event saw each division compete for $1,000 winners prize as part of the annual Memorial Day Championship.
