Record entries at cruise-in on Blairsville square

The Blairsville Historic Courthouse Square was alive with classics, hot rods, trucks and custom cars with a record 86 registered vehicles at the Saturday night cruise-in sponsored by the Blairsville Cruisers. Many entries from Cleveland and Dahlonega, Ga. and one from Duluth, Ga. attended.

On Tuesday, June 16 the game of the day for the Chatuge Shores Ladies Golf association was Even Steven and was flighted. Only the even number holes counted in the game.

Night of firsts at Tri County

First time winners were the story of the night at Tri County Racetrack Friday, June 19. It was the fifth weekly show for the track this season. As part of the event, the Kajun Mini Stock Association came to Brasstown for a $1,000 to win race.

What a decade 2020 has been

  As I type this, it is 1:37 p.m. on Monday, June 15 and my first day back at the sports desk in the Clay County Progress office. When COVID-19 halted sports, my life changed drastically. It was as if someone pulled the emergency break while I was hammer down on I-40.

Football season taking shape

  On Monday, June 15 the North Carolina High School Athletic Association ended the “dead period” brought on by the COVID 19 outbreak. The return to athletic competition began in the form of workouts that fell under heavy regulations.

Eyes of world on local racing

In what might be the greatest example of irony, the largest number of spectators to ever see a race at Tri County Racetrack in Brasstown came on a night when the grandstands were empty.

Laura Cottrell is the youngest member of what could be considered the first family of Western North Carolina basketball. Her father, Steve, coached the men’s team at Western Carolina for 10 seasons in the late 1970s and 1980s before spending another dozen seasons at Hayesville High School.
