Mary Louise Smart Penland, 96, of Greenville, S.C., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2021 at River Falls Rehabilitation & Health Care Center in Marietta, S.C. She was born on July 24, 1924 in Clay County to the late John Thomas Smart and Ida Belle Barnard Smart.

Dominic Carl Nasco, 92, of Hayesville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021. He was born in Wicklife, Ohio to the late Micheal and Clara Sebetta Nasco. Dominic was a US Marine veteran; he served during the Korean War. He was a builder.

James Jack Ledford Sr., 85, of Hayesville, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021. H e w a s born in Clay County to the late Guy a n d C l e o Bradley Ledford. James was retired from the Little Debbie company. He loved to ride horses, build race cars, working in the yard and loved his family.

Baby Owen Chandler Phillips peacefully slipped into the arms of Jesus on Jan. 19, 2021 while being held by his parents and surrounded by his grandparents. He was born on Jan. 18, 2021 to Kalen Chandler and Ashley Chastain Phillips in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Randy Gibson, 69, of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2021. He was born Oct. 24, 1951 in Russellville, Ark. to John Curlee and Mildred Vance Gibson who have preceded him in death. Mr. Gibson grew up in Cleveland, Miss. and was a 1969 graduate of Cleveland High School.

Perry Farrell Deitz, 58, was a lifetime residen t of Clay County who passed peacefully at his home on Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, after an 11 year battle with cancer. He fought a gallant battle. His hobbies included music, estate sales, yardsales and flea markets. He enjoyed helping others.

Mildred Hawkins Hughes

Mildred Hawkins Hughes, devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother, passed away Friday, Jan. 8, 2021. She was 93 and a lifelong resident of Cherokee County. Just after graduating high school, she began work at Hackney Carolina Company, where she met Charlie J. Hughes, her husband of 57 years.

Mattie Adeline Plott Cayce, 102. of Hayesville, N.C. passed away on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021. Mattie was born in Clay County, N.C. to the late Paul and Evelyn Hampton Plott. She was a sales representative for the Disneyland retail store.
